My profile

I completed my thesis in the laboratory of Dr Viesturs Simanis at the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC) and obtained my PhD from the University of Lausanne (UNIL) in 1993. After completing my postdoctoral training with Dr Roger Brent at the Department of Molecular Biology at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Genetics Department at Harvard Medical School in Boston, I joined the Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM) in Milan in 1998 to head a research group. In 2000, I joined the Department of Genetic Medicine and Development at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Geneva. I was appointed to the Integrative Genomics Center at UNIL when it was created in October 2004, and was its Director from January 2015 to December 2022. I am a former President of the European Society of Human Genetics(ESHG) and the current Chairman of its Scientific Committee.

My laboratory and I work on rare genetic diseases. For example, we have evaluated the impact of changes in the architecture of our genome on our traits and associated pathologies.

Why OPPAL?

For me, volunteering for OPPAL's monitoring activities or joining its committee means doing something that benefits all parties rather than criticizing those who think differently from me. What I like about the Oppal spirit: proof by example!

My assets for OPPAL

I've been working for the Swiss Ornithological Institute for 40 years and have observed mammals all over the world. I know the wolf well, having observed it in Finland, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, India, Israel, Alaska, Wyoming and Australia. I am also chairman of two thesis committees currently working on the KORA-UNIL "Wolves and Cattle" project.
